I love how the simplicity of the composition plays up the push-pull of warm and cool tones in the whites. There is a surprising amount of color in this.
Michael, I am admirer of your work and have been checking in on your blog for some time. You seam to have mastered hard and soft edges. This cup has a definite translucent look of porcelain, very difficult to achieve. Bravo! Phil Holt
I was just looking for pictures of crows on the web and your painting popped up. I just wanted to stay a moment and let you know that the art on your blog has literally stopped me in my tracks.

Ohhhhh, I love this, Mike!
This mug may not have the dramatic lighting and shadows of your other paintings but it definitely has that "Naples Classic Painting" feel to it.
Very soft and subtle and simple in its composition and execution yet it looks like it would've been hard to paint.
The broad brushstrokes on the foreground compliment the smaller ones on the mug.
I love the contrast between the rough painterly brushwork of the mug/backdrop against the smoothness of the coffee (or is it hot chocolate?).
Love the highlights in the mug's inner rim too!
A delicious job!! Ahahaha, get it?

I always love your work, but some just strike me more than others.... this is one of them.
People always down play the importance of value. I'm glad you know how important it is.
