This is a commission. The younger brother of a girl that I drew a couple of years ago. It's a short week this week which isn't exactly a good thing. I have a lot of things to do and less days to do them in. On that note, it's up to the studio.

I absolutely loved painting the detail in this crate in the background. This is kind of a warm up to a 12x12 I am doing for a group show in Atlanta in September. Now I can't wait to start that one. I absolutely love the shape of this cherry. I hope that doesn't sound weird. The antique wood here is actually an old wash board. It was one of my finds at the resale shop and the only reason I bought it was for the look of the wood. That's how the artist's brain works, I guess.

I had this painting in mind for a couple of weeks. Then last saturday, I saw the DailyPaintworks challenge was to "paint what you paint with". Perfect timing for me. This painting is a bit looser and that is what I love about it. I think if I tried to paint every detail and make it really tight, I would have lost all of the drama.

I love classic cars. Admittedly, I don't know a fraction of the facts my dad knows, but I'm into the look of them. I swear, at a glance he can tell you the year, make, model and three additional tidbits about any car. I don't understand it. I barely know what I drive to work each day.

I wanted to do a different take on the apple wrapped in a cloth...so I flipped it upside down. There is just as much interest on the bottom than on the top. Or at least that is what I tried to prove.

This is a painting I've been thinking about for a few weeks. Ever since the Magnolia trees started budding in my area. I caught this one at the perfect stage of starting to bloom.

Two of my favorite parts of this painting are the stem and the reflected light. I always try to push the reflected light in my paintings because it adds so much drama.

What really attracted me to this composition was the cast shadow on the wall. If I got that shadow right, it would imply that the dollar was crinkled a bit.

I've been searching for a while to find a red pear that was good enough to paint. All of them have been dark red and boring looking. This one, however, made it worth the wait. The only one with a distinct green stripe and a lighter shade of red. Nice. I'll paint that one.

I love how these wires seemed like a tangled mess. This was one of the demos I did this past weekend. I was fortunate enough to have a gentleman fly in from Turkey to do a 3-day workshop with me. It was an honor and pleasure.

As soon as I pulled this cork out of the bottle, the merlot color was singing. I knew right then that I had to paint it. This auction is being hosted by Daily Paintworks instead of Ebay. This is a road I drive on everyday on my way to and from work. It's a slow speed limit with plenty of scenery. I love this route. This painting just shipped to Susan Powell Fine Art today. This composition makes me think that the two top pears are peeking down to see what the green pear is up to. Almost out of jealousy or curiosity.
On a side note...as most of you know, I do mostly small paintings that are right around 6"x6". Lately I've been doing more and more larger pieces for gallery obligations. Not huge but still bigger than the usual, so for me this requires a bit of a different setup as far as lighting and easel, etc. I recently acquired a set of lights that includes a Lamp and Stand as well as an additional Clip on Lamp from The Daylight Company. It could be tricky buying lights for the studio but these are great. They simulate the most natural light (which for me is good because I paint mostly at night), are easy to maneuver, they have extra long cords and they don't get hot (even when they are on for hours at a time). AND they come with bulbs so they're ready to use right out of the box. Click here to read more technical stuff about them. Below is a picture of them in my studio in front of a work in progress.
